Premier League midweek fixtures: Manchester City and Villa could be the final, will Arsenal become the “championship judge”?

Although this week is not a regular Premier League matchweek, two important clashes still take place: Manchester City vs Aston Villa and Arsenal vs Crystal Palace. Though there are only two rescheduled fixtures, they could have a huge impact on the Premier League title race and the battle for Champions League spots this season.

FA Cup interrupts the league and the Premier League make-up games kick in
Because this weekend features the FA Cup semi-finals, four teams—Manchester City, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace—need to adjust their schedules to participate, forcing some league fixtures to be brought forward. This week, Manchester City, Arsenal, Villa, and Crystal Palace will play their make-up matches first, while Nottingham’s game will be postponed to midweek next week.

This also means the seemingly “quiet” midweek in the Premier League could unleash a wave of potential “chain shocks.”

Manchester City vs Villa: Champions League qualification + an FA Cup “double consideration”?
The first to take the field are Manchester City at home against Aston Villa. This match is not only about league points but could also be a dress rehearsal for this season’s FA Cup final, as both sides are in the semi-finals and—if they beat their opponents—could meet in the final.

The race for Champions League spots is getting fiercer
At present, Manchester City sit fourth on 58 points, while Villa are seventh on 57 points. The two are separated by just one point but three places. With the Premier League expected to have five Champions League slots this season, as many as five teams from Newcastle to Villa are within two points—making the fight incredibly intense.

Over the past decade, City have largely dominated Villa, losing only twice—but both of those defeats came in the last three meetings. In the first half of this season, Villa beat City at home, so they may hold a psychological edge here.

Comparing the run-ins: Manchester City have a slight advantage
Manchester City will face Wolves, Southampton, Bournemouth, and Fulham in the final stretch—a relatively favorable run. By contrast, Villa will meet Fulham, Bournemouth, Tottenham, and Manchester United. Even if some opponents lack strong motivation, they’re still heavyweights, and it won’t be easy for Villa to win them all.

Arsenal vs Crystal Palace: A “quiet battle” that could decide the title?
Meanwhile, Arsenal host Crystal Palace, and in terms of drive, Palace appear to lack “hunger or ambition.” Palace no longer have hopes of finishing in the top eight, while Arsenal are already out of the title race. Yet this game could determine whether Liverpool seal the championship early.

Liverpool currently lead Arsenal by 13 points. If Arsenal lose this round, they would indirectly “push” the Reds to the crown ahead of time. That may be the biggest motivation for Arsenal to “restore their pride.”

Rotation vs strongest XI has become a key suspense
In the last two rounds, Arteta rotated and got two draws. Last weekend, they fielded all key players and won by four goals, showing the team still has strong fight. Against Crystal Palace, Arsenal have won 16 of 26 over the past 20 years and are on a six-game winning streak, indicating a clear psychological advantage.

However, Arsenal will face France’s Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final next week. When the two met in the group stage, Arsenal won 2–0. Meeting again now, the question of who can reach a first-ever Champions League final has become the focal point.

Therefore, whether Arteta rotates again has become a central talking point. If a rotated lineup is used once more, the suspense of the Premier League title race may be revealed ahead of schedule.
